Legendary director Steven Spielberg was adamant the film should not get a follow-up.
teven Spielberg fought to stop a sequel to ET the Extra-Terrestrial from being made.
The legendary director had already made classics including Jaws, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and Raiders Of The Lost Ark before he moved on to the beloved alien movie, but he insists he did not have enough clout to stop the studio's plans until ET became a huge success – and he used his power to make sure a second movie would never hit the big screen.
Speaking at the TCM Classic Film Festival: New York Pop-Up x 92NY event, Spielberg explained: "That was a real hard-fought victory because I didn’t have any rights.
"Before ET, I had some rights, but I didn’t have a lot of rights. I kind of didn’t have what we call ‘the freeze’, where you can stop the studio from making a sequel because you control the freeze on sequels, remakes and other ancillary uses of the IP [intellectual property]. "I didn’t have that. I got it after ET because of its success."

In 2002, Spielberg prepared a "20th anniversary" edition of E.T., and in the final minutes, he edited the film so all the guns the police and FBI had were changed into walkie talkies.
Screw that! E.T. shot first!
Or is that the one where E.T. fights Apollo Creed?
“E.T The Extra-Terrestrial” is one of those movies that doesn’t need a sequel and should be a once in a lifetime experience, just like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” or “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind”.
According to one Facebook reel, that involved an actor in the movie, apparently ET was a plant which is why plants responded to him.
He was a government plant?
As in some form of herb or tree.
Maybe a plant from another planet to infiltrate mankind, maybe.
Do plants react to other plants?
I never understood all the fuss over E.T.
LOLLZ! Good one! 👍Hahaha.
No, it’s where ET grows into a full grown alien, remembers that most of the humans suck, so he gathers up his posse and comes back to fight Will Smith.
Tommy Lee Jones plays the POTUS
He comes back leading a conquering army of similarly gruesome looking creatures.
I thought E.T. was a dumb movie as was Close Encounters.
Even the real illegal alien understood the need to go home. Only emotional kids and their family wanted to keep him here illegally.
I wish he had fought that hard to prevent a Jaws sequel.
(I never understood all the fuss over E.T.)
Same here. I thought it was quite lame.
Bring back the Atari 2600 game!!
LOL 😂
