There are times in history when countries are gripped by election fever.
January 2025 in Belarus is not one of them.
Drive around Minsk and you'll see no big billboards promoting the portraits of candidates.
There is little campaigning.
The grey skies and sleet of a Belarusian winter add to an overriding sense of inactivity.
And inevitability.
The outcome of the 2025 presidential election is not in doubt. Alexander Lukashenko, once dubbed "Europe's last dictator," who has ruled Belarus with an iron fist for more than 30 years, will be declared the winner and secure a seventh term in office.

Zelensky should help them get started and bomb their capitol building. Ukraine owes them a punch in the nose.
Best thing all Belorussians could do is just boycott the elections completely.
It’s a no lose situation for the fat bell end, because even if he loses fair and square, Putin would fly to his rescue just as happened a few years ago to ensure that people voting the wrong way doesn’t make any material difference to the outcome.
So the best way Belarus could respond to the election is treat it as the fakery that it is.
Hilarity would indeed ensue.
Been saying all along, keep your eyes on Belarus. Putin wants it, but Lukashenko is doing just enough to keep the Russian Bear at bay.
I liken that relationship to more like the one between Hitler and Franco.
I am surprised that the Russians haven’t offed Lukashenko, as the pretext for them invading.
Luka may be a detestable human being, but he’s probably the only reason you don’t see Russian troops right up against the Polish-Belarusian border.
I looked high and low for any reason why their election matters to me and I’ll be dang, nothing.
