Lynch redefined television. TV dramas prior to Twin Peaks were so cheap and formulaic. Lynch showed what television could be. Twin Peaks made way for such high quality, original TV epics as The Sopranos, Lost and Game of Thrones.I agree his greatest legacy was the television show Twin Peaks not his films.
I really liked Twin Peaks as well as The Sopranos.
I have never seen Lost or Game of Thrones.
I see a similarity between Twin Peaks and the Sopranos, in that they were both great television that run out of gas in the end.

So did Game of Thrones. A slow decline from a great first season to a legendarily awful final season.

Always some sort of hidden activity behind ostensible normality.

That's true. I remember all the dull cookie cutter cops shows set in Southern California, all filmed during the '70s and '80s. The colors were always washed out, and the air tinged with smog, and they featured extreme overuse of the zoom lens. The stars always sported well coiffed hair, sprayed down with aerosol hair glue.
Yes, I'll give Lynch his props for getting away from that boring mold.

Chris Elliot did a hilarious double satire, targeting both sitcoms and cops shows of that era, called
Action Family.
It really captures the feel of those shows.

OMG! That is the absolute BEST thing I've looked at all week. It captures every schlock genre of the 70s and 80s and wraps it up in one place.
The music is hysterical:
- The Funk bass guitar and funk brass.
- The pablum sitcom score
- The Partridge Family send up.
That clearly was Chris Elliot's masterwork, including the Letterman cameo. Unbelievably creative and insightful.
And it's total lack of saturated color, a dull Eastman color pastel mess. Wow—so 70s and 80s.
Thanks so much for sharing that! 20 years of crap lampooned to perfection. 👍

Chris Elliott made two specials for Cinemax at about the same time (hence Letterman's "They'll put anything on cable." quip).
One was Action Family. The other was FDR: A One Man Show.
