I realize this is an extreme case, but the expectations for tips have gotten completely out of control. I always tip 20%, but that’s often not enough for meal servers and delivery folks. It’s not my job to make up for their wages and Biden’s inflation.
I was always told it was 15%
Either way yes it’s not up to us to make up for their wages.
Perhaps they should unionize or demand the government pay them min. wage. In Europe waitresses are paid min. wage. Maybe we need to go to that.
I can remember when 20% was a good tip. At the bottom of the receipt, they would show tip calculations for 15, 18, and 20%. Now, they typically show 20, 25, and 30%. So 20% magically went from being a good tip to being a crappy tip. Also, the calculation was formerly based on the pre-tax amount. Now, they base it on the post-tax amount.
But my biggest peeve is being expected to tip someone for just taking my order at the counter. That's nuts!
Tipping is entirely out of control. I've seen self checkouts that ask if you want to leave a tip. Not gonna do it.
Of course, if people considered the cost of the tip when ordering food at a sit down restaurant, they might reconsider going out to eat. Likewise, mediocre service doesn't deserve a tip, it's supposed to be for exceptional service. I once called a manager over to tip the kitchen staff because the food was really good, and asked him how the hell the waiter was still working.
