Wind is supposed to come back, but hasn’t yet.

Tuesday, the day these fires started, was a huge windstorm, of the type that happens every ten to 20 years. Last one was in 2011.

Winds are not going to be like that again, which is good.

Can’t they be just “winds”, not “wind events?”

I know little about controlling fires in the firey regions of California, but controlled burns is my best idea.

I don’t think winds are current almost 100MPH
That was peak a couple of nights ago

In any event
At least one structure appears to be on fire at mount Wilson

I can’t believe they didn’t cover it in fire retardant this morning like in past fires

Looks like the JPL has a natural fire break to protect the eastern flank. The Hahamongna Watershed Park, and the Arroyo Seco.

Cal Fire web site

https://www.fire.ca.gov/

Zoom in on the map so that Rancho Cucamonga is on the right near the top, Rancho Santa Margarita or Corona is on the right near the bottom and Palisades fire is at the left.

This gives an overview of the larger LA region.

The fires are in specific regions. LA is not on fire. We don’t need hyperbole and hysteria.

The Palisades fire is most heavily populated and is in LA city and the fire hydrants had no water. Due to neglect and incompetence.

The Eaton fire is in the San Gabriel foothills where there are fires every year and a big one every few years. There are often some houses near the foothills that burn down in these fires. This year there were hurricane like winds on Tuesday when the fire started. Consequently embers flew more and farther and many more homes and businesses have burned this year.

Keep praying and stay rational.

The wind speeds were posted in the chryon a few hours ago. They could have been historical in nature, but I think the production staff might have grabbed the highest gusts from the greater area, not necessarily nearest the hottest frontal boundary lines of the fire.

Again, these are ridgeline winds, which behave differently in that they accelerate as they pass over the ridge, creating vortices that have brought down small planes that ventured too close to the phenomenon. Think of how an ocean wave curls under at the break in a counterclockwise motion/circle.

I recall a storm hit the Sierra one winter bringing with it 180 mph straight line winds, measured at the ridgeline. The damage estimate was over 10,000 downed trees.

Winds for today: NWS / LA

* WINDS...North to northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35
mph, except 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph in the Hollywood
Hills. Winds diminishing Friday afternoon.

I think we've joked at times in the past about CA either falling into the ocean, or perhaps burning down. I don't want anyone to get hurt, of course, and I hate to see people's homes and livelihood destroyed, especially now that we found out the home insurers lost their coverage a few months back.

But now that all this is happening, it's all frightening.

HAPPENING NOW: The Eaton Fire is approaching communication towers which service local media outlets throughout Southern California.

The towers located on top of Mount Wilson are also used by law enforcement.

“It is really important for radio transmissions in Southern California because it is very high and it gives an exceptional viewpoint for the entire Southern California area.”

“Law enforcement, fire and media, television stations and radio use Mount Wilson as a major broadcast point.”

KFI had already said most planes and copters were grounded over mt Wilson due to the turbulence caused by the fire. The helicopter guy on national tv didn’t seem to know that.

Worst case Scenario - an earthquake during a high wind event

In 1755, Lisbon Portugal experienced what was thought to be a 7.7 earthquake.

About 45 minutes after the quake, the immediate downtown was hit by a tsunami.

Given that the quake happened on All Saints Day, many homes had lit candles which tipped over and started multiple fires which eventually grew into a firestorm.

Best estimates are 20,000 to 30,000 were killed.
