Hilde Dosogne's ambitious goal for last year would humble most of our New Year's resolutions.
At the start of 2024, the Belgian set out to hold the record as the first woman to run a marathon every single day of the year — 366 in total (it was a leap year). On Dec. 31, the 55-year-old finished her last 26.2 miles of the year in Ghent, Belgium.
To make it official, Dosogne is working to submit evidence of her mileage, including GPS data, images and witness reports, to Guinness World Record officials.
Dosogne is used to running extreme distances. She completed the 153-mile Spartathlon in Greece in 2022 and 2023. So, she didn't feel the need to specifically train for the year-long goal.
"I must say, I really — I underestimated it," she said in an interview on Saturday with All Things Considered host Scott Detrow. "The toughest part was actually the mental part of being at the start line every day again," she said.

At my best I did 5 miles a day, 5 days a week for few years in the military... That was 40 years ago. Now we walk to the mailbox which is .4 mile one way but a 17 degree slope which is tiring come back and that’s with bad knees and a bad back.
The secret is to keep moving..when you stop it’s not good.
This lady may be nuts but congrats!
Why?
I recall reading that running a marathon can do acute harm to the heart, requiring a recovery period. Running a marathon daily cannot be good for longevity. But at least she’ll die with a record.
My suspicion is that she’s on anti-depressants. Her doctor needs to answer for the dosage.
Sprinting is much better for health than marathons. Ever compare a sprinter’s body to one who does long-distance running?
HIIT is the ultimate. I do 40 sec mountain climbers with 20 sec rest until I reach 600 total mt climbers. I’m 66. Otherwise I walk 30 minutes most days at 4 mph. No injuries feel great! I used to run but it hurt my knees and Achilles.
Who has that much time in a day to run a marathon? Every day?
Depends on your build and how one runs. Running for top speed is hard on the body. Running at slower speeds - how slow is individual - is not hard on the body.
She’s been doing extreme runs for years so she is obviously well built for running. If she was abusing her body by doing this, she would NOT have been able to do daily marathons.
Could I do it? Nope. Not even close. A typical good distance runner weights in pounds about twice their height in inches. That isn’t me. You need to genetically have a large bone cross section for your weight and near perfect alignment.
Me? At Medicare age, 15 miles a WEEK is plenty. Down from 25 miles a week when I was younger. A marathon would kill me. But I’ve never been an elite runner. Wasn’t born for it. But I’ve been jogging for 50+ years and haven’t lost height or damaged my knees.
Running is not bad for your knees - 80s myth, like when they thought fat and eggs were bad. Running is good for connective tissue.
That said, I would think running a marathon every day would be hard on the body in other ways.
what brand running shoes does she recommend?
She looks like someone build for running and has a low, flat, modest stride.
Looks like “Hoka” is her shoe of choice. They run around $200. I don’t own any but my jogging is around 2.5 miles a day, not 25...

I thought about doing that. And it’s the thought that counts. Plus, the toughest part is mental anyway, right? That means I did the toughest part.
