Without having any real information about this case, other than "ex footballer at 27", I would bet on a drug overdose, such as heroin, or cocaine, or fentanyl.

Sad to lose anybody so young, whatever the reason. Prayers to his family.

This was him at 26. IMO, he looks 50. Something was aging him quickly.
