The New York Stock Exchange will close trading on January 9 to honor a national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter.

It is customary for the NYSE to close trading to honor the passing of the president. The last such occasion was in December 2018 for the death of George Herbert Walker Bush.

Nasdaq will also close for trading that day. The bond market will close early at 2:00 p.m. ET, per the recommendation of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

What a fitting honor for Carter but to halt all economic activity, just like the "good old days".

That makes sense.

Carter destroyed the economy—shutting down the stock market is a great way to demonstrate his legacy.

Icing on the cake would be thousands of vehicles driving around Wall Street honking their horns and pretending it is a gas line.

Lol.

Maybe fly a couple Sikorsky S-65 helicopters over Wall Street with a banner memorializing him too - just as long as they don’t crash.

I have not commented upon the passing of President Carter untill now.

Carter represented a time of America when things were quite different. It is understandable how he was elected following the messiness of the whole Nixon affair and the ascencion of our first unelected President, Ford.

Like many here, I am a former Democrat. I voted for Carter as in my first Presidential election. I was born into a democrat family and well, that was that. Besides, Carter hung out with the Allman Brothers—how cool was that eh?

I was such a dyed in the wool Democrat that I didn’t even vote for Reagan in 1980, despite being in overseas in the Army...I just repeated the democrat tripe as educated opinions...

But of course things changed. Iran, the Hostages, gasoline prices, soaring interest rates, etc...reduced expectations. That was the beginning of my questioning of what was really going on...

I believe that President Carter was a governor from a small state that ended up over his head once he got into higher office. In the end, he was not a good president as far as presidents go. But he was not a malovent president either. He did not hate his country, nor try and change it into something that it wasn’t—it was more like he was atop a tiger and hanging on for dear life.

He deserves all the accolades that will be given to him—as a man he deserves that just for reaching 100 years of age. Its funny, how we honor those that reach that magical milestone—but here we are. In the end, history will be his judge.

The man is dead—so there is no real point in pointing out his failures—except to combat pundits that argue otherwise.

President Carter is dead and its time to give him his due and let him return to the Earth as dust—He was our President, for good or ill at a different time in America—an America that no longer exists.

So we want some more of that “malaise” thing? Why not lower the speed limit to 55mph as a tribute? Let him go. He sucked as governor, he sucked as president. He had some good intentions, but was entirely unqualified for the job.

“except to combat pundits that argue otherwise”

That is a full time job—we are talking about thousand of leftist media types and leftist historians and leftist “experts” here.

I have zero tolerance for propaganda and/or lies—no matter who died.

Also appropriate would be to halt all gasoline sales on that day, just like the “good old days” of the long GAS LINES caused by Carter’s policies.

God Bless the memory of Jimmy Carter but politics always seems to rear its ugly head and his passing is getting big billing by folks with political motives.
