The shocking rise in the number of newborn babies found abandoned in Texas has unnerved communities, raising urgent questions about women's reproductive health.
At least 18 babies have been abandoned in the Lone Star state this year, with the latest found just before Christmas at a Whataburger fast food chain in San Antonio, according to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
A decade ago, the number of abandoned babies per year sat at just seven.
It is not clear whether or not there is a common link between the increasingly common tragedies. However, the alarming rate of abandonment is happening in a state with one of the country's most restrictive abortion bans.
In Texas, the law makes no exceptions for victims of rape or incest as it pertains to abortion, yet, the state yields one of the nation's highest birth rates.
Currently, the southwestern state sits next to last on the rankings for women's health and reproductive care, according to the Commonwealth Fund, which supports independent research on such issues.
In light of the disturbing increase of child abandonment, Leah Kipley, the assistant director of the National Safe Haven Alliance met with Texas legislators to advocate for a safe haven awareness campaign.
'We're all just reeling at the tragedies and hoping we can make some meaningful changes to prevent this,' Kipley told the Washington Post.
Twenty-five years ago, Texas marked the first state to pass a monumental safe haven law, the Baby Moses law, which allowed parents to relinquish their newborns at designated 'safe' locations such as a hospital, fire station, free standing emergency center, or emergency medical services station.

Definitely. There are a lot of adoptive parents who would be ecstatic at the opportunity.
I think the number of children being turned in is more a function of the safe haven law than the abortion law.
So ... the Daily Mail thinks the solution to the tragedy of child abandonment is to kill the children.
Exactly. They’ve got the cause and effect skewed to support abortion.
Also, how many babies are from illegals and from the sex slave trade? In the 2020 census, Texas had 4 million more people, and those are the just the ones whe were officially counted.
“A decade ago, the number of abandoned babies per year sat at just seven.”
(In other words, a decade ago at least 11 more would be dead, murdered at the hands of some quack in a “clinic.”)
Sounds like their 'reproductive health' is just fine. It's how and when they exercise their 'reproductive health' that need adjusting.
I suspect there is a large percentage of babies being left by illegal migrants. Call me stupid if I’m wrong.
It's wild to watch some people pretend like Elon Musk didn't put his wealth, his businesses and his freedom on the line to help elect Donald Trump and help save this country all because they don't like his position on H-1B visas.
He bought X, he brought people back, he monetized it, he publicly supported Donald Trump, he went to battle with the EU, Brazil, the censorship industrial complex, he formed a PAC, he donated large sums of money, he moved to PA before the election, he didn't just write a check, he spent his time and energy getting Donald Trump elected. And he did it all before he knew whether or not he would be successful, knowing that if he wasn't successful, he would most likely be investigated criminally and possibly indicted.
Again, this is a person who is a billionaire and who didn't need to put his own money on his own personal freedom on the line to save this country. But he did it.
And he didn't do it after Donald Trump won like Zuckerberg and Bezos. He didn't do it when it was financially and politically convenient, he did it when it was very inconvenient.
For that, he deserves a tremendous amount of gratitude, respect, and appreciation. it is the height of arrogance not to understand that.
Discounting that or pretending like he is less pro-America because you don't like his position on H-1b visas is insane.
Not to mention somebody that went through all that to get Donald Trump elected seems to want America to succeed. So I'm pretty sure he would be open to a discussion about reforming the visa process. But even if not, that's his opinion and he's entitled to it, and people are entitled to disagree within our movement.
I really hope people will think about that because at the end of the day we don't want to be the left.
“...babies being left by illegal migrants...”
That was my first thought
Personally, if birth family cannot be found there is always room in my home and family for another Blessing.
The cartels are doing this. Will take all bets.
Nope. Not stupid.
MAYBE jaded but what with the way life is these days, sad to say, it was my first thought as well.
OMG 18 up from 7!!!
This necessitates an emergency return to infantcide clinics!
“I really hope people will think about that because at the end of the day we don’t want to be the left.”
Amen, brother. Well stated.
The satanist of the left, really got to hand it to them
“Women’s reproductive health” = women’s right to kill their babies wherever and whenever.
One could surmise that contraceptives had never been invented.
Sounds like we have women out of control.
