Saipan going into WW2 was Japanese territory taken from Germany in WW1. it was populated by Japanese sugar farms and mills and became an integral part of Japan’s war plans and defenses. Capture of Saipan allowed constant bombings of Tokyo and all Japan, and the Emperor ordered that Saipan be held at all costs. Saipan and Tinian, from which we atom bombed them, are full of memorials maintained by the Japanese.

Was just there. No comparison.

But yeah the N Koreans don’t belong in Europe.

Saipan was originally a Spanish territory, but was sold to Germany in 1899.

Saipan and the other islands of the Northern Marianas were German-controlled until seized by Japan in World War I. Following the World War I, Japanese rule was recognized under the League of Nations mandate.

On 6/18/1944 (fourth morning of the Saipan campaign), USMC I Company was reduced from 247 to 6 in 15 minutes at the bottom of the 1,554-foot limestone Mount Tapochau. PFC Lee Marvin was one of the 6 survivors. His sciatic nerve was severed by an enemy machine-gun round leaving a 9x3 inch hole in his butt. He spent the next 13 months in Naval hospitals.
