How are these business going to survive? Most businesses can't survive that long.

The Humble Sea is closed in the offseason.

Is this wharf publicly maintained? Did woke or incompetence cause the collapse?

In the meantime, Keeley said the city is working with its wharf tenants on some financial help that will likely come in the form of rent relief.

That mighty white of them.

"I don't know how long that will take. It's going to take such time as it will take for them to do it right. Whether that's days or weeks, I don't know the answer," Keeley said.

It's Commiefornia.

Years......

And it still won't be safe even then because, government work.

***********************************************

The City says that global warming caused the collapse. I am not kidding. A city spokesman made the claim and the local news aired the claim without any pushback.

When the city/state finds out how much in taxes they’ll be losing, you’d better believe they’d be fixing the pier very quickly.

Well, I was going to Stagnaro’s for lunch tomorrow and Marianni’s for my taffy but, I’ll have to go to Castroville and eat at Phil’s fish market..

Without a jetty or artificial reef, I don't know of any slender wooden wharf that could withstand a rogue wave of that magnitude. It would just lift the top deck off the posts. Even a container dock would likely be damaged.

It was a stochastic event. That's what insurance is for.

Another possibility is corruption.

At least the local residents that created the group that filed thge Lawsuit to shut down all repairs ago are happy now. The County should FORCE them to PAY for the rebuilding.

I worked for MBARI during startup. Phil used to own the property but got busted for importing more than fish. The property got sold at auction; Dave Packard was the only bidder at $750K. We gave Phil room for the original fish market in the building housing the machine shop. He used to sneak in at night and steal salt water for his critter tanks. (We had a tap on the power plant’s cooling intake to supply water for the Aquarium’s projects.) When asked about the night time water he said little. We said all you had to do was ask. After that we set up valves and piping so he didn’t have to run hoses after hours. The move to Castroville came after MBARI needed the space.
Phil was pardoned by Clinton in 2000.
From WIKI:

Philip Vito DiGirolamo
United States District Court for the Northern District of California 1984
Conspiracy to import marijuana; willfully subscribing to a false tax return

I think he lobbied John Laird who lobbied Clinton.

Well, the end of the wharf, with three buildings, including s restaurant and a bathroom, were blocked off for renovation in a reported $4 million project. I don't see any evidence of incompetence, except for this collapse. Personally, even with high surf, I don't suspect it should have collapsed. I suspect a lawsuit is coming.

Not every act of incompetence is because of wokeness, but I have no idea what happened.

I did not know all that.

LOL

I hated going to Phil’s @ Moss Landing because it was impossible to get in.

Luv the new place.

Easier to get in but, they did just have their liquor license put on hold for 90 days.

I’ll bet that was great for their revenues during The Holiday’s...

I liked the old place. It could be crowded, but I always got in. I liked eating outside, of I could, but you have to watch for aggressive seagulls. They used to have music some nights.

But in all those years, that was the first wave of such magnitude? There have been far worse storms.

The reports I heard is that the wave was 20ft above the deck. That's an awful lot of water. It's possible.

"Rogue waves" are a matter of constructive interference (waves from different direction and period adding to each other in a particular spot), in shallow water also interacting with the shape of the bottom, reflections off the shore, and the incident direction of the waves. Together, these factors can multiply wave height.
