A young North Carolina woman was doused in gasoline and set on fire by a sick suspect who then fled — leaving her heartbroken mother wondering, “How could they do this to my baby?”
Ashanti Downey, 20, was rushed to the emergency room the night of Dec. 16 with second-and third-degree burns down the right side of her body, according to WRAL News in Raleigh-Durham.
Staffers at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford called the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office at about 7 p.m. to report the horrific act, which happened as Downey walked along Highway 27 toward a Dollar General in the same town.
That’s when an unidentified man came up behind her, dumped gas all over her and lit a cigarette that sparked the blaze, Downey told investigators.

Every day we get news of another horrific crime. Our society is becoming desensitized to the atrocities committed by gang members and the drugged out mentally ill.
Rather than commuting the death sentences of those convicted of crimes, we need to speed up the process and put to death those who are obviously guilty.
Horrific.
Barbarism. This society needs to begin putting an end to this criminality.
Here is another story showing the depravity in today’s society. Luckily, a good Samaritan got involved and rescued the baby.

The cops are mystified. They’ve been bamboozled. A bunch of head-scratchers. And yet, they know exactly why and how this happened.
According to this reportage...
...there were three perps.
FWIW.
What the #3LL is wrong with LE that they would contact the family about this baby??????????
“Our society is becoming desensitized to the atrocities committed by gang members and the drugged out mentally ill.”
I suspect that if we could take everything in total, that today’s society is more benign than any in history. In the Middle Ages almost every “crime” which included stealing bread, was a capital offense. That’s because there were no prisons for the common people. Yes, there are horrible things happening all over and all the time, but there always has been. Our memory of the safe 1950s is probably because there was no social media. Newspapers often censored the details of crimes as they were too gross for breakfast. That did change with the bleeds-it-leads times, but those came later.
Having said that I carry concealed. I discovered from a neighbor whose children were playing with kids next door to me that the guy next door had an entire wall in his house of photographs of me taken with a telephoto lens. I had no idea. But suddenly my neighbor’s bizarre behavior made sense. There are crazy people out there, but they’re much the exception. Still, the world would be much safer if everyone carried a gun on their hip. The unsafe people would quickly be weeded out.
Thanks. I saw the post before but did not read it until now.
I hope they find him and give him the death penalty.
Quite likely. The perp saw how much attention Zapita got for his crime, so he wanted a slice of the notoriety.
I’m not saying it is, but three perps might suggest gang retaliation and not so much as random.
Or a boyfriend.
Quite possibly.
They just can’t state what they think happened lest they throw the case into disarray. Their statements of uncertainty is meant to protect the case from being thrown out. They also keep cards close until they have all the fact and all accused associated with the crime lest there are others and they tip off those involved but not yet arrested.
Horrible but I would be surprised if it was random.
No description of the perp = not really interested in catching him
A sick fad egged on by media attention.
“an unidentified man”
That tells me enough
