Russia launches massive Christmas Day attack on Ukraine

Many Ukrainians were celebrating without heat or power after Russia launched a Christmas Day assault on the country’s energy infrastructure, an act that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned as “inhuman.”

“Today, Putin deliberately chose Christmas for an attack. What could be more inhuman,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X early Wednesday. "Every Russian massive strike takes time to prepare. It is never a spontaneous decision. It is a conscious choice not only of targets, but also of time and date."

Over 70 Russian missiles and more than a hundred drones targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with Ukrainian forces successfully shooting down more than 50 missiles and a significant number of drones, Zelenskyy added in his post.

Zelenskyy also said that the “targeted attack” on the energy sector caused outages in several regions, including Kyiv, and emphasized that Russian forces “continue to fight for a blackout in Ukraine.”

“Russian evil will not break Ukraine and will not distort Christmas,” he said.

Russia's defense ministry confirmed the attacks.

“This morning, Russia's Armed Forces carried out a massive strike with long-range precision weapons and strike drones on critical energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine that ensure the operation of the military-industrial complex," the ministry said in its daily briefing on Telegram.

“The strike’s objective was achieved. All facilities were hit,” it added.

by most christians you mean most people fighting in ukraine or just worldwide?

the distinction would seem to be important.

worth noting that historically ukraine celebrates the same day as russia. they changed it as part of their religious transition to roman dates VERY recently.

I also read about a yemen christmas attack on israel. it just highlights the use of the ‘christmas attack’ journalist approach to casting shade on a war on a day that none of the native participants even celebrate.

now if you mean nato-country troops in ukraine, that is different. they suffered a christmas attack!

Yes most Christians recognize the 25th as Christmas. Could be wrong but the Russian Orthodox Church still uses the Julian calendar while the rest of the western world uses the Gregorian calendar including the Russian govt.

When you say Ukraine celebrated the 7th until “VERY” recently that would be the those who followed the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine. There are plenty of Russians who were not of that faith and celebrated it on the 25th.

Considering the long occupation of Ukraine by the Soviets and their known policies of Russification of occupied territories like Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia that is not a surprise

As to “Christmas “ attack on Israel, the 25th for the first time in over a hundred years aligned with the Jewish holiday as well

With all that said war is war and the 25th or 7th could be considered just another day, and if I were defending a position and being attacked I would respond, however Putin could have taken the day off from attacks, he chose not to, make of that what you will. What I find very disingenuous are the folks trying to make the distinction between the 25th and the 7th

Let’s see if Ukraine launches a wave of missiles and drones on the 7th and Russia Ian’s Russian trolls have a hypocritical fit.
