More accurately, the West's obdurately Leftist elite has lost enthusiasm for democratic elections at home due to the rise of populist nationalist sentiment that endangers their rule. And experience shows yet again that elections in non-Western countries commonly replace one corrupt thugocracy with another.
The resulting civil strife then sends waves of refugees fleeing toward the West's open borders and generous welfare systems -- which in turn spurs the populist nationalism that endangers Leftist rule. Yet we should not despair of democracy or the West.
Painfully and in confusion, even the Leftist elites of the West seem to be rediscovering the real world necessity of prudence and restraint and of governments that serve the best interest of the people of a country. Such policies led to the rise of West -- and may yet save it.
