The Tesla actually runs on a mix of natural gas, coal and nuclear energy transferred with a small loss of power through to the generators that convert it through a small loss of power to electricity.
Except it's no "small loss." In contemporary thermal power plants, about two-thirds of the energy that goes into them is lost in conversion. And then the electric vehicle itself loses an additional 15% in conversion, resulting in a total energy loss of about 80%.
Whereas a car with an internal combustion engine has a total energy conversion loss ranging from 60% to 75%, making them a more green than electric vehicles.

Actually, solar now accounts for MORE THAN 100% of all new electrical capacity. (There are new gas-powered generators, but these less than make up for other closures.) If energy demand goes up, solar gets built, not gas or coal.
