NBA Celtics head coach admits he'd 'rather watch something else' as NBA ratings decline
Fox News ^ | December 19, 2024 | Ryan Morik

Fewer people are watching the NBA than in previous years, including some of the sport's top names.

Ratings for NBA games on ABC, ESPN, TNT and NBA TV are down 25% through Saturday, according to Sports Media Watch, and there are many ideas floating about why.

Three-pointer propensity and lack of defense are the two main bugaboos observers point to.

And it's become clear that players rest more often than they used to and that the regular season has been watered down in recent years.

Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was asked about the declining ratings, and one would think the coach of the reigning champions would defend his game. But that was not the case.

God has had enough of Idol worship in America. The obsession with sports in America will be dealt with.

When they decided to take a knee during the national anthem, a lot of fans decided to take a pass on watching. Now those people’s kids aren’t growing up watching. In general, they lost a lot of fans and are not making new ones.

And it’s easy to see why.

3-pt shooting, no defense, 1 player just driving and a move or kick-out for a 3 is boring; players travel, carry the ball, and just stand around. The game is horribly lame and boring. I like basketball. I have tried to watch NBA. I just can’t do it. College is mostly fun to watch yet.

The sheer number of basic offenses that are completely ignored in the NBA is ridiculous, and is likely a part of the loss of viewership.

Travelling, double-dribble, not giving way, are ALL out of control.

I see things that when I was in high school would have gotten me pulled for the game BY MY OWN COACH ignored by the NBA referees.

College basketball is better than ever. It’s early yet, and I’ve already seen some stellar games.

Can't recall whether it was Dan Patrick or Colin Cowherd this morning (I was working and listening to sports radio), but one of them absolutely lambasted politics as having destroyed the NBA. Whichever one it was, I suspect both of them feel the same way.

Either get rid of the 3 ball or allow zone defenses

Finals rigged and predetermined from the start of the season.

Might as well start the semi-commercial-finals now.

There are more important things to Joe Mazzulla than the NBA.

They can’t compete with women’s college volleyball now either.

Watch the Penn-Nebraska semi highlights.

I’d much rather watch EuroLeague basketball than the NBA.

I propose an alternate league without the 3-point line, get back to fundamentals.

At least soon the WNBA will reach parity with the NBA ratings-wise.

Also, there are no marketable players. How many NBA players do you see in ads these days? Back in the day, when Michael Jordan or Bird, Shaq or Magic came to town, it was an event.

“College is mostly fun to watch yet.”

Wish it wasn’t going the same way. In the rules of each of the books, NCAA and National Federation, there is a line that says just because there is contact doesn’t neccessarily constitute a foul.

You mention everything but the pushing off, off arm pushing by dribblers, intentional fouls never called as such, and disrespect for the game, the officials, and the fans being way out of line. The people who watch the game can put up with the failure of the players to be talented as it is nothing but size and contact. But they can’t put up with their flipancy by the players while they are receiving way over paid checks coming from over priced seats, snacks, and parking. And it is getting into lower level ball now until it is no longer basketball but gladiators.
