Well, in fairness, witch-burning in the U.S. was localized to a brief area, and a brief time period.

Mr Eze, the prosecuting counsel, told PREMIUM TIMES that the murder charge was filed against Mr Chukwuilo because his report to the village council resulted in the beating of the woman to death by some villagers.

Wouldn't it make more sense to charge the council?

Was this MORE reasonable than the European witch trials? Many of those witch killings were based on accusations like failure to say the Our Father prayer properly; such a nervousness induced memory blank was said to be the result of Satanic possession. As I understand it, there were a LOT of dead people around this African witch, not just “shrinkage,” etc. But rather, ALLEGEDLY, this woman made up a list of people she wanted dead, and they all ended up dead.

There's something to that. See the C.S. Lewis quote on my Post #6. Presumably rational and honest people act upon the basis of what they know and see. If we are convinced there are such things as witches and that they are doing all these nasty things, then they need to be dealt with. But people deal with things at the level of their knowledge of such things, which may be more or less than ours.

I'm not saying that this guy is innocent under the law for what he did, but in his mind he may have felt completely justified.
