ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos is “apoplectic” and “humiliated” by the network’s decision to pay $16 million to settle a defamation lawsuit brought by President-elect Donald Trump, The Post has learned.
Stephanopoulos, who claimed Trump had raped E. Jean Carroll during an interview with Republican lawmaker Nancy Mace, was particularly upset about being forced to apologize, a source with knowledge of the situation said.
Another source told The Post that “George is defiant.”
A third source said Stephanopoulos “is a very guarded person. His circle of trust is so small, and a lot of them don’t work [at ABC anymore].“
The first insider added that the host of “This Week” had recently signed a contract extension with Disney-owned ABC News — though the source did not disclose the terms of the deal.
The former Bill Clinton aide has kept a low profile since the settlement — a $15 million donation to a presidential foundation and museum for Trump and another $1 million for Trump’s attorney fees — was announced on Saturday.
He has deactivated his X account, where he had more than 2.3 million followers.
Some ABC News staffers fumed at management for keeping a tight lid on coverage of the settlement, the first source said.
It was “front page news everywhere yet ABC doesn’t report on itself,” the source lamented.

Trump raped her during an interview?
Legal Discovery of ABC’s internal communications would have been interesting to see. But $16 million, and a defacto admission of guilt, have their own good points.
And Nancy Mace was there - it was her interview.
“Such a tragedy. Saw George playing miniature golf the other day. He just calls it golf.”
was he playing with Robert Reich?
Lol
Trump’s aura is irresistible to most women.
Poor little Stephie. That this guy got a job like he did for so long, speaks to the blatant bias of the enemedia.
Gosh. I get the feeling that his apology will not be sincere. Apologizing without being sorry at all.
Little georgy snufaluffagus?
“”Trump raped her during an interview?””
Don’t you love the sentence structure of today’s journalists? This is one of several questioning their ability on FR in the past few days.
I remember one from many years ago and it was when journalists really had to learn their craft..about a robbery:
“She was shot in the rear of her store.”
Open a vein, Georgie Boy.
George came up a little bit short...
Wait. I thought he had to apologize. Is he taking it back? Lawsuit is still on!
Why is the settlement $ going to the Trump library instead of ... wait for it ... to Trump?
I predict ABC will be the first network to cut it’s news operation. With the decline in viewers and rise of alternative media it’s just a matter of time, not unlike what’s happened to the newspaper industry.
Their numbers are still good, but the cost of running a global news operation is high, and I think their owner (The Mouse) is likely to get tired of supporting it in order to maintain even a leading share in a dying industry. They have more lucrative ratholes to throw money into.
Poor little dem hack.
Some years ago, while a grad student at Columbia, my professor told me a story of how she was once approaching an open elevator with her arms full of papers and called out to then-adjunct instructor Stephanopoulos, inside, to please hold the door. He watched her dispassionately as he made no move to hit the button and let the doors close in her face. A few weeks later, a very official-looking letter—addressed to Stephanopoulos—was accidentally delivered to my apartment across the street. It gave me some measure of satisfaction as I calmly dropped it into the garbage can. It was the least I could to to return his act of “consideration”
But he still has his job.
He’ll be doubling down on stupid comments now in retaliation for his humiliation.
