Probably some sort of GPS/GPS-like system tells them where they are.
Both the VTOL and aircraft style drones/UAV’s/Hobby aircraft can be flown first person with a headset. My architect buddy was building performance drones years back that could reach nearly 200 mph and the vehicle itself could be built for under $200 then.
You could “ride along” with a spare headset and it is ALL the benefits of flying minus the screamy/deathy part involved with crashing LOL
