The Kremlin has appointed Lieutenant General Andrei Ivanayev as commander of the Vostok Battalion group of forces, which is leading the assault in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, according to state affiliated media.
The popular Ukrainian military Telegram channel Country Politics, which has more than 290,000 followers, reported Ivanayev's appointment on Friday suggesting it was tied to a visit by Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov to the region.
Over the past year, Russian forces have made grueling but steady advances in the Donbas, which President Putin formally annexed as part of Russia in September 2022 though his troops only partially control it. However this has taken place at a massive cost to Russia.

Crushed them sounds easy and decisive, that is a mew one on me, those of us who were there, or lined up to be there and anticipating 25% losses just from trying to get to Europe, or leading those forces who would be fighting to death for our survival, saw it that way at all, and frankly anticipated that the war would be so massive and destructive and so total, that going nuclear was a given.
No, crushed as in what we did to the CSA and the Axis. Yes, we took bloody losses, but we pounded them into the ground.
As I pointed out, we didn’t know if we could win, nor what be left if we did, your dismissive fantasy was not widely shared.
