Keep in mind that NA was pretty much scowered, burned off by the Event 10900 BC that killed of the mega fauna, eliminated the Clovis people, ushered in the Younger Dryas Event which lasted 1000 years, and caused sea level to rise 400 feet.
What happened prior to that Event is spotty at best. So canines could have been pets long before that 12,000 date.

So when did domesticated dogs appear and began to love and cherish humans? And what was the cause that made "ancient" canines to become man's best friend. I've always wondered about that. Yes, I'm a dog lover.

I took my dog, a chow mix, out to the river (long time ago now).
I was so surprised to see him standing over a shallow part of a stream, to suddenly submerge his snout into the stream and come back up with a fish in mouth, tilt back his head and swallow it. Looked just like those bears that get a salmon and eat one.
