Donald Trump has issued an ominous warning to Vladimir Putin to secure a ceasefire with Ukraine after Syrian rebels toppled their longtime leader - a major Kremlin ally.
Trump voiced his views via Truth Social after Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, fled amid a dramatic coup following more than 13 years of civil war in the country.
The Islamist rebels also dealt a major blow to the influence of Russia and Iran in Syria in the heart of the region - allies who propped up Assad during critical periods in the conflict.
Trump tied the seismic moment in the Middle East to Putin's war in Ukraine, saying the Russian president had 'lost all interest in Syria' after funneling resources into the eastern European conflict instead.
'Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer,' Trump wrote at 2am on Sunday.
'There was no reason for Russia to be there in the first place. They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever.'
Trump, 78, added that Russia and Iran were now in a 'weakened state' because of the war in Ukraine and 'a bad economy' - while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy 'would like to make a deal and stop the madness'.
'They have ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians,' Trump wrote, referring to Ukraine. 'There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin.
'Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse.
'I know Vladimir well. This is his time

Having possibly blown maintaining control of Tartus, I see a sustainable corridor to Crimea as the lynchpin with the Ukrainians.

Outstanding. It will be some time before it becomes clear who ends up in control of Syria. Hopefully out deep state agencies and officials won’t be the ones influencing the outcome… they have a piss poor track record on such things.
Hopefully, with Trump coming in, we won’t see American taxpayers’ money supporting the Islamists who are coming into power there. Let Turkey financially support them if they want.

How are the butter lines in Tatarstan today? Did you get your ration?
“Let Turkey financially support them if they want.”
I wouldn’t bet against Iran making a deal with them. They all hate Israel. This is the time for Lebanon to drive all the terrorists out. Israel would probably help.
It’s not too difficult for Trump to take the moral high ground, embarrass Putin and mobilize the world’s sentiment against Russia.
Putin could also tell Trump to mind your own business.
Kurds and Christians will be murdered by victorious Islamic fanatics. Still, this is Assads fault—he burned out what loyalty he had with his own people and they would not fight for him or his Syria. That was his fault. Arab Spring came late for Syria so it seems. We are seeing the rise of a new Ottoman Empire as Turkey becomes the dominant power—under the NATO umbrella. Turkey can hit you, but if you hit Turkey all of NATO will attack you due to article five. Watch as they use a “Final Solution” on the Kurds.
Assad fell too fast-—It was well planned and financed—see the “Rebel Troops” all in New Uniforms that look like Turkish Issue? Maybe the Turks will have a better time running things.
Could be bad times for Israel. Turkey has earned the hate of Russia. Historically Russia and Turkey have fought 11 wars and Turkey has won only 1.
All the day one stuff doesn’t apply to these matters.
Trump has a brain. He is making no decisions until Tulsi has scrubbed information of narratives.
So expect action in March.
Anybody can tell anybody to mind their own business. The point is that Trump wants to de-escalate the conflict and leave it to the regional players to resolve it. He’s rightly encouraging Putin to do the same.
