FDA may outlaw food dyes ‘within weeks’: Bombshell move would affect candy, soda and cakes, revolutionize American diets

The Food and Drug Administration will decide on a ban of certain food dyes in the coming weeks after receiving a petition to review the safety of Red 3, NBC News reports.

“With Red 3, we have a petition in front of us to revoke the authorization board, and we’re hopeful that in the next few weeks we’ll be acting on that petition,” Jim Jones, the deputy commissioner for human foods at the FDA, said during a Senate meeting this week, per NBC.

According to the FDA, the agency has reviewed the safety of Red 3 —which is derived from petroleum and found snacks, beverages, candy and more — in food and drugs “multiple times” since it was first approved in 1969, but the petition has requested for the additive to be reviewed once more.

“With the holiday season in full swing where sweet treats are abundant, it is frightening that this chemical remains hidden in these foods that we and our children are eating,” US Representative Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ), a ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, wrote in a letter to the FDA.

“While food companies must ensure that the food they market is safe, they are also only required to ensure that their products meet FDA’s standards. This means that thousands of products that contain this chemical can remain on the market.”

He argued that there is “no reason” for the additive to be in food “except to entice and mislead customers” to make products appear “more appealing.”

Thomas Galligan, who works at the Center for Science in the Public Interest as a principal scientist for food additives and supplements, echoed a similar sentiment.

“These food dyes only serve one function in food, to make them look pretty...

I suspect the taste was changed along with the color change although I don’t know enough carrot history to be certain. But purple veggies have never attracted me. Bad eggplant memories.

FDA already has a petition before it on red 3. I did not see anything about RFKJ on this, but I do think fewer chemical additives to our food is not a bad idea. I imagine that highly nutritious breakfast food, like pop tarts is made much more attractive to our kids with red color, and means less work for mom or dad to fix a healthy breakfast for children. /s

I don’t know if I agree with all RFKJ’s thoughts on vaccines, but for years I have urged mothers not have their little ones given a bunch of them all at once, preferably no more than 3 at a time. And only when the child is in good health. I don’t know how unethical drug companies have been in the past, but here is a shocking story recently told to me by a person who seemed both intelligent and knowledgeable. This person spent some time in a house where several high level executives for Pfizer were meeting and celebrating. This was when the Covid vaccines were in development but not yet being given out. The men were saying that as soon as certain conditions had been put in place, they were all going to get very rich. Also they were saying they WOULD NOT take the vaccines themselves. I suspect they were talking about the decision for payment of “free” vaccine shots that were paid for by our taxes.

My mother was a third grade teacher 20 years in the 1960s and 1970s in a middle class, mostly white suburb. Over those years she complained to me that the quality of her students over those years definitely seemed to be declining. She felt it was probably the fault of increasingly poor nutrition and fancy junk food. We used to joke about Froot Loops and Twinkies. We had a victory garden from 1944 to 1955, grew 50 varieties of vegetables, had wild berries and apple, pear and grapes on the property, and canned and ate all the surplus. I never had a cavity until I went to college and enjoyed the rich tasty sweet treats served breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had 6 cavities after that. The second year I moved into off campus approved housing where we cooked our own food and I had NO NEW cavities after that I am now a healthy 86 year old with all my teeth, some now well repaired and others never decayed at all. My only medications are levothyroxin, and eyedrops for an a somewhat injured eye.

I began learning about the medical use of supplements over 50 years ago, and have stopped or reversed several serious developing conditions, like varicose veins “uncurable” cataracts, and shrinking. If a doctor says something can’t be fixed go and Google “Nutrition and supplements to help xxxxxxxxxxx.” I found 4 or 5 supplements I was not taking with my usual supplements, and after 3 years my cataracts are 75% improved.

“But many people don’t have any problem with not having out food treated with pesticides, herbicides, and antibiotics that leave residue on the food.”

In fact, billions of people are having problem with NOT having food treated with pesticides, it’s called crop failure and hunger. We have had that for all the history of humanity up until modern agriculture and even now in third world countries. Not knowing it is ignorance at its worst.
As to “antibiotics residues on the food”, what the heck are you talking about?

“Inflicting it on people without their knowledge is NOT OK.”

Do you know which quantities of cyanides you eat in your organic almond, lectine in your whole grain bread, solanine or heavy metals in your garden grown tomatoes? All those are proven and ubiquitous poisons.
No you don’t, so shut up the virtue signaling.

Is there any difference in Canadian figures on autism, allergies or other conditions suggested as being caused by the additives they don’t use compared with our figures?

Of course there was contraception before the 1950s and 60s. I was born in 1938, war broke out and my father was at risk of being drafted. My brothers were born in 1946 and 1948. Around that time I noticed these little square packets with something round inside that said, “for protection against disease.” The disease was getting pregnant when times were hard from 1940 to 1945. Nobody was starving in my neighborhood, but in 1943 my father had much of our large yard plowed for growing food. We ate or preserved most of it by canning for winter. I worked most weekends in the garden, hated that, but my father let me sell surplus to neighbors and save the money for my own use. We kept the “victory” garden until I was 15 as we were moving that year.

My husband showed me a family history written by his mother. One ancestor in the Midwest had nine children. Either 4 or 5 of them died young. Most or all died in the late summer/early fall at the age of 2. This was probably when they were weened and drank cow’s milk or other adult food. This was in the mid 1800s, probably before the Civil War. My husband’s grandfather had raised a company for the Civil War, but died of typhoid after a long legal struggle to obtain a piece of family land from 6 other claimants. He was 42. Life was indeed hard.
