Ping!......................
Is this where the phrase “Don’t get my Irish up!” comes from?...........
Oh we’ll drink and drink and drink and drink, and then we’ll fight and fight and fight and fight.......

There’s nothing to rattle...
They’re still doing it in the UK....organized league and everything.
I used to watch it on FUBOTV.
First rule of the Fight Club is: You don’t talk about the Fight Club..................
Supposedly a true story:
Early in WW1 a German officer sent a message across the lines to the British. “Perhaps we can settle whose army is tougher by arranging a boxing match. Our best against your best.”
“ Send over anyone except an Irishman.”
Good lord, 75 rounds of beating each other to a pulp. The MMA has nothing over these guys.......
BTTT
Abington, not Abingdon. Right next to Brockton, home of Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler.
I guess they fought until a knockout or someone gave up, no decisions.
Is this true?

Many years ago I read a history of WW1. And that story (post #10) was in it. I might not have the wording exactly right, but I do remember the gist of it.
Of course the author might have taken a rumor for a fact. So you never can be sure.
That championship belt sounds amazing. I wonder if it’s on display anywhere.
A friend of mine did USMC duty in the 70s at the US Embassy, Dublin. Told the story that he and his Irish girlfriend, later wife, were at a village pub out in the sticks and watched two big fellas stand toe to toe, straw on the floor to absorb blood, and trade punches with bets going on who would drop first. Not a fight, just literally one by one trade punches to the head. Pretty sure the frill knickers EU has put a stop to such by now.
coming from an Irish family myself...I know how stories take a life of their own, and become exponentially inflated as time goes on....the exaggeration is always in favor of either:
1) the Story Teller
2) The Irish as a whole
3) Both 1 and 2
