Peter Navarro, the America First economist who went to prison rather than testify against President-elect Donald Trump about the January 6th, 2021 riots, is coming back for round two.
CBNC reported that Trump has tapped Navarro to serve as Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing in his second administration. The nod is a striking turnaround for a loyal ally who served four months in prison for defying a congressional subpoena to testify about the January 6th, 2021 riots at the Capitol. The president-elect alluded to his conviction in a statement.
“I am pleased to announce that Peter Navarro, a man who was treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever else you would like to call it, will serve as my Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday morning. “During my First Term, few were more effective or tenacious than Peter in enforcing my two sacred rules, Buy American, Hire American. He helped me renegotiate unfair Trade Deals like NAFTA and the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS), and moved every one of my Tariff and Trade actions FAST….”
Navarro, 75, has been out of prison for less than five months, the outlet added, underscoring how quickly President-elect Trump is working to shore up his administrative leaders before his January 20th, inauguration. In August, the economist and former congressional candidate spoke at the Republican National Convention where he praised Trump for surviving an assassination attempt and reminded the Republican Party about how loyalty is the coin of the MAGA realm. He previously served as Trump’s Director of Industrial Policy and Director of the White House National Trade Council.
Part of President-elect Trump’s mandate will be to enforce new trade agreements that stipulate sharp tariffs on goods that compete against those made in the U.S. Countries like China, Mexico, and Canada have been at the forefront of those efforts which Navarro is expected to head up in his new role. He has previously advocated for the controversial economic policy and doubted the likelihood of retaliation “for the simple reason that we are the most lucrative and biggest market in the world,” he told Fox Business in 2020. “They know they’re cheating us, and all we’re doing is standing up for ourselves.”
Navarro’s 2006 book “The Coming China Wars” has been a lightning rod in economic circles for its plainspoken warnings about the rise of a Chinese superpower in the 21st century. His critique of “global capitalism,” especially the exporting of manufacturing jobs and production, has dovetailed perfectly with President-elect Trump’s firm belief that America’s economic systems have failed its workers. Major unions including the Teamsters and International Association of Fire Fighters declined to endorse in the 2024 election, citing in part Trump’s commitment to reining in overseas investments by American corporations.
