President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, on Sunday is exceptional not just because of the pardon’s recipient — the closest family member to receive a pardon in history — but also for its sheer breadth, according to experts on presidential pardons.
Biden didn’t just pardon his son for his convictions on tax and gun charges, but for any “offenses against the United States which he has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014, through December 1, 2024.”
That’s a nearly 11-year period during which any federal crime Hunter Biden might have committed — and there are none we are aware of beyond what has already been adjudicated — can’t be prosecuted. It notably covers when he was appointed to the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma in 2014 all the way through Sunday, well after the crimes for which he was prosecuted.

Make sense doesn't it....
My view is that it was always going to happen. It was predicted here for months as inevitable.
The outrage is interesting. It's in his gift to do this and even the way he's done it I think as there are no "guidelines"!
Where does this leave US politics? It's not a good look.
Trump train should mass pardon the J6ers as he has hinted which is also in his gift...
It goes back to getting Joe elected and using his son as intermediary, the prez was ALWAYS going to issue a blanket pardon and poof all the crimes go away, it’s like a thief closing the vault door after the heist and changing the combination to the safe so no one will ever see how much was stolen. BRILLIANT.
He could always be prosecuted in Ukraine if he violated any laws there. The Vindmann’s come to mind as co-conspirators. Trump has a negotiating tool.
I believe that the power of the Presidential pardon should be limited to:
Federal crimes
Post-conviction by a court
Perhaps a Constitutional amendment is in order?
Yes unfortunately it’s an unusual absolute power and a gift from that office
Hunter’s so, so lucky ...
The Founders bear some responsibility for this. They fought to get rid of a king. Then they gave presidents unchecked, king-like pardon power.
A better arrangement would have been to give Congress the ability to override a presidential pardon with a 2/3 vote in each chamber. Sort of like overriding a presidential veto.
If I ever invent a Time Machine, I’m going to mention this to Ben Franklin.
The silver lining is that a Judge can now force Hunter to give testimony against others that might be linked to his crimes.
The ONLY potentially good thing coming out of the pardon is that MAYBE Hunter will lose the ability to claim the 5th amendment rights under certain interrogations. You know, to questions such as “Now, Hunter, about this money that went to your uncle….”.
But I’m not a lawyer so that possibly may not be right.
They did a good job on nearly everything else apart from this one, unchecked power.
A pardon eliminates the ability to refuse to testify before a grand jury, Congress or in court, based on the 5th Amendment right to avoid being compelled to self incriminate. I do not care if they will not face prison time, I do want the information about their criminal activity to be made part of the record.
The ability to issue pardons is an absolute power of the Presidency. The recipient cannot reject the pardon. The President issues it, and there it is.
My advice to DJT is - hand out pardons liberally, like candy. Then have Congressional Committees and Grand Juries go to work!
It sounds like all these are now piling on BiteMe. I wonder why now?
Good luck with any Constitutional amendment: we can’t agree on who the man/woman is, try to agree on anything else…
And American’s are like the hooker in Steve Martin’s “Man With Two Brains”. “I DON’T MIND!”
"Seemingly" - the WaPo is being disingenuous again. They could also have uncovered chargeable crimes and declined to prosecute, which is, ah, "seemingly" the case.
None? Not even anything that you might have suspicions about. I mean the shell companies, the large checks to family members, half the stuff on Hunter's laptop - nothing? I bet they close their eyes and stick their fingers in their ears over at WaPo
Do you think many Democrats would vote to override the pardon?
It's hard to be aware of things that you have no interest in seeing/finding, WaPo.
If you think the average idiot Democrat’s head is spinning now just wait. Hunter’s parden was only the first, biggest middle finge. The entire Biden clan is going to get these blanket pardons in blizzard before Jan 20, 2025.
All he has to do is pull a James Comey and say, “I don’t recall.”
