Even most Catholics can’t get it through their thick heads that there is no such thing as the purported “good person/bad person” distinction when it comes to the salvation economy here in the Church Militant.
Although there are degree of iniquity as culpability, yet since all fall short, misusing and abusing things a benevolent God gave us, from our brain to our feet and abilities , and a world of beauty and vast resources in a universe (which man now worships) which testifies to God, then all have sinned. Nor can man become actually good enough to be with God in this life or via some suffering afterward.
Neither can man take any credit even any good that he does, since that is due to God's influence and enablement, (Phil 2:13) but man can and must take credit for the sins and evil that he has done, and can only be saved through God-given (Eph. 2:8,9) effectual penitent, heart-purifying, regenerating faith in the Divine Son of God and Lord of all, (Acts 10:43-47; 15:7-9) who saves sinners on His account, as this faith is imputed for righteousness, (Romans 4:5) and is shown in baptism and following the Lord, (Acts 2:38-47; Jn. 10:27, 28)
And those who die in that obedient faith will go to be forever with Him at death or His return (Phil 1:23; 2Cor. 5:8 [“we”]; Heb, 12:22,23; 1Cor. 15:51ff'; 1Thess. 4:17) In contrast to those who were never born of the Spirit or who terminally fall away. (Gal. 5:1-4; Heb. 3:12; 10:25-39)
Yet man's ultimate choice reveals what his response to God's grace is:
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. (John 3:19-21)
