An Alabama A&M football player who suffered a head injury during a game in October has died.
Medrick Burnett Jr., 20, was playing his first season as a linebacker with Alabama A&M University when he sustained the injury during the annual Magic City Classic against in-state rivals Alabama State University on Oct. 26, the Jefferson County coroner said in a statement Friday. The coroner listed his official time of death as Wednesday evening.
The Alabama A&M athletic department announced Burnett's death Wednesday morning and then sent out a retraction later that day. The second statement said the initial news of Burnett's death came "from an immediate family member on Tuesday evening."

RIP young man.
Very sad.
Sad for his family at this time of year.
RIP Medrick
Tragic. Have they done all they can with the science of football helmets?
There will always better materials and designs. It’s a matter of material science and ergonomics.
However, I think maybe weight limit categories might play a role in safety. If a 250lb high schooler, with mounds of muscle, hits 170lb average high schooler, he’s going to kill him.
Maybe change the sport so it’s less about tanking somebody in a hit and more about skill.
My wife hates football just because of that. My dad was a high school coach. He had a kid die on the field while playing. So sad.
I haven’t seen the play but they aren’t going to put weight limits in HS/college or pro football.
Some people are more susceptible to these type of head injuries- regardless of the helmet.
Want to take head injuries out of football? The answer is simple- go back to leather helmets and take the head out of the game. No one wearing a leather helmet is leading with the head (which is mostly illegal anyway)
Linebacker has got to be worst position for brain injury.
A friend played college football in the late 80s. He recalls vomiting on the sidelines and seeing yellow many times.
I agree that cutting back on the safety equipment would help.
I understand they won’t change the game.
I think rugby is a better sport, on a technical level, than American football.
Don’t hurt me.
Rugby is better! You tackle the ball not the person!

Or, simply just outlaw face masks.
I played rugby for 20 years. Played football in high school. Agree completely that rugby is a safer better sport.
From October 31...
Note this bit...
“...Maynor did not give specifics on the sort of injury Burnett Jr. is facing...”
Head injury...or something else.
Horrible.
I killed a player in high school.
Football is just not worth kids losing their lives over it. It’s hard to imagine how the other player involved in the collision must feel. RIP Medrick Burnett, Jr.
Visited a Big Ten field house long ago. The weight scales were mf’d by Toledo Scales (Toledo, Ohio).
The minimum weight in the scale range, was 150lbs.
