The Vice Chairman of Russia's Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, who had previously repeatedly threatened the West with nuclear weapons, has unexpectedly changed his rhetoric. "We would not want something like this to ever happen. There are no madmen in the Russian leadership," he stated.
Medvedev emphasised that Moscow views the use of nuclear weapons only as a "last resort" and stated that the threshold for their use has been verified considering "existing risks".

Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Medvedev has become one of the main spokespeople for the Kremlin's aggressive rhetoric, repeatedly threatening the West with nuclear war and the "end of civilisation".
Among the world capitals he threatened with nuclear attack were specifically Washington, Paris, and London. Following the US approval for Ukraine's use of American long-range missiles to attack military targets on Russian territory, Medvedev announced the imminent start of World War III.

A 125mm gun has a muzzle velocity of 1800f/s and that is hyper-sonic.
MAD....mutually assured destruction
“ A 125mm gun has a muzzle velocity of 1800f/s and that is hyper-sonic.”
I am pretty sure that is “only” supersonic, which means it is faster than sound. I have read that hypersonic means 5x the speed of sound. There have been reports that the new Russian missile goes up to 12x the speed of sound.
1800f’/s (4,000 mph) is the bottom of hypersonic speed curve.
Most all Americans would celebrate Washington DC being nuked.
The Russians know this.
The term hypersonic missile is understood to be a missile that travels at hypersonic speeds and is also maneuverable at the same time, not a simple direct ballistic path like a ballistic missile. Maybe they should come up with a new term such as ‘evasive hypersonic.’
I know zero about the physics of this so have to assume that you may be correct. But hypersonic weapons well slower than 12x have been used widely in this war, have they not?
I think this new missile slows down when it is time to maneuver and get on final target trajectory. Nothing can “maneuver” while still in the atmosphere at hyper-sonic speed. Above the atmosphere it can maneuver but not at lower altitudes.
Another ATACMS strike on Russian and North Korean targets happening NOW.
Scrolling through the comments, they miss the point. The West has absolutely NO DEFENSE against these weapons…..and….they can be fitted with 1800 lbs of HE or a nuke….and the missile has six independently targeted warheads.
These scared NATO into calling an emergency meeting 26 Nov.
But the ridiculous Russia worshipers here already declared “”We have been warned”! and to Russia’s side on this.
But now Russia withdraws the threats so I guess these folks are more anti American than Russia!
Talked to my cousin. He was in a unit of missile defense years ago.
He said as you say except he wonders if enough flak was scattered in front if it wouldn’t work.
Like firing a hell of a huge shotgun round in front of it.
Other than that, he says the key is electronic. Scramble the electronic system somehow.
Can I nominate NYC to your list? Maybe Milwaukee, too. ;-)
That’s why it’s so difficult to control.
