Yes, if a woman dressed in traditional Amish attire were to show up at a Democrat fundraiser in some posh San Francisco venue, with ten identically dressed youngsters in tow, there might be whispered comments, people pointing and smiling derisively, etc.
But that's a very contrived set of circumstances.
Also contrived: A passel of unkempt, dirty children being yanked along by a tatted-up woman in a welfare line. Yes.
In 90% of the country, however, a mother not married to a notorious alcoholic, or with no husband at all, with half a dozen nicely dressed kids attending church services, going to school, etc. - no problem!
In Moscow or St. Petersburg, people will also whisper when a gypsy woman, with a parade of youngsters following her, walks by.
