They should have never crossed the line of paying players. The portal only exacerbates the corruption. Billions being bet breeds corrupt officiating, point shaving and general cheating. You could have asked Pete Rose about such things.
Players have always been paid, it’s called a “Scholarship”, now the fact that many players don’t end up taking advantage of it, isn’t the issue.

What I find so odd is that the only reason — and it’s a very, very good reason — people aren’t talking about Notre Dame as a strong contender for national champion is that they lost to Northern Illinois.
Notre Dame would still seem very unlikely to be a national champion if they lost to a fairly high-quality opponent, like Georgia or Tennessee or Army. The fact they lost to such a low-quality opponent only emphasizes that you can’t judge a season based on one game. How many teams have been justly, reasonably eliminated from contention by much, much more understandable losses?
I most definitely do not like this system. Get rid of playoffs altogether and go back to the bowls.
In 2003 Oklahoma was crushed by Kansas State and lost the conference championship. Nonetheless, due to its "strength of schedule," Oklahoma was jumped over USC to play in the BCS championship game, even though USC had won its conference and had only one loss, which came after triple overtime.
Oklahoma deservedly lost the BCS championship game, while the Trojans beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl to win the championship according to the coaches' poll. To this day, USC claims to be the 2003 National Champion.
College football is getting more and more like pro-football. Just this year, they phased in the two-minute warning, which gives advertisers the opportunity to run one more raft of ads.
Weekday games, which take place during classes and disrupt the educational mission of universities, are also creeping in.
Our area of South Jersey (Saint Augustine Prep.) has a local boy playing for Army this year, Udoh and he is pretty good. Would not be surprised if Daniels isn’t being looked at by professional teams.

So six top 25 teams are playing each other this week.
# 2 Ohio v # 5 undefeated Indiana
# 6 Notre Dame v # 19 Army
# 14 BYU v # 21 Arizona State
Will a loss by these teams knock them out of the playoffs?
Boise has a bye in the playoff, but is 2 win Wyoming a trap game? Wyoming is the highest elevation stadium in the US. Will the thin air hurt Aston Jeantry’s performance? Or is just a beast.
After Wyoming, Boise State has one more blue field game, against 4 win Oregon State. If they don’t win these games, than they don’t belong in the championship. (Although, I have never been to Idaho, Boise is my team to root for).
Georgia is playing a cupcake team, Massachusetts. The question is not who will win, but how high Georgia runs the score up.
Note, I don’t have time to make the chart all pretty.
Even if Notre Dame was undefeated, and had the hardest strength of schedule, by NCAA rules, Notre Dame cannot be any higher than 5th in the playoffs.
You missed the point entirely. The fact that the NCAA rules guarantee the top four playoff positions to Power-5 (er, Power-4) conferences in no way affects whether Notre Dame might be considered a favorite for National Champion, other than allowing for one more opportunity to lose a game.
But since you bring it up: Suppose Indiana loses to Ohio State (or vice versa). Who could argue against the notion that losing to Ohio State should be much more forgivable than losing to Northern Illinois?
