Gender = Sex. Sex is not "assigned" at birth. Its not like anybody has a decision to make about it. Gender/Sex is DETERMINED at birth if it has not already been determined via ultrasound. Nature determines it at the time the sperm fertilizes the egg.

Gender, like race, is subjective. Can mean anything one wants it to mean. Which makes it meaningless.
