When asked in an interview what was his motivation to play the flute, I recall Ian Anderson saying that he learned how to play the flute because, well, just because he wanted to learn how to play it. End of story.

Quite possibly the best intro to any rock song (extended version only).

Ian has said many times in interviews that he was a guitarist but felt overshadowed by the hot guitarists like eric clapton and thus picked up the flute as there was less competition. Interesting that martin barre also played flute in his band prior to jethro tull.

He learned fast and was performing on the flute within days of starting to learn. Might have even performed without a day of purchasing it. Fuzzy on the specifics. But he almost immediately switched to performing on flute along with occasionally performing on acoustic guitar on stage.

Ian can play basic keyboards but write his songs on the guitar. He didnt provide anything but basic chords - no real charts to bandmates. He taught the songs to bandmates by playing the song on the guitar . Martin and others figured out their parts.

Thank you for taking time to provide this detail. I’ve always been a fan and truly respect Anderson’s and his band’s creativity (as well as their talent, of course)! Cheers!

Then I experienced something terrifying. I was being pushed by a massive crowd of people and I had no control over it. I made it through tfine, but I learned that was an experience I should be able to avoid for the rest of my life.

Exact same thing happened to me at a NFL football game in 1973. Got separated from the family by the crowd, someone pushed me to the ground, some guy stomped me trying to get to the gate, and the next thing I know my dad was standing over me exercising a completely justified and judicious use of force on people. He saved the lady who went down next to me too.

How is Taylor Swift satisfying in the moment? Her lyrics are about as satisfying as a pile of horse manure.

Wasn’t it? I probably listened to it (and it alone - I hated AM Top 40 crap even then) from 1966 to 1969 when I departed the St. Louis ‘burbs for Mizzou. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get KSHE in Columbia.

You are welcome. Only fairly recently did i sit down and get up to speed on jethro tull in detail and watched lots of youtube videos.

I started listening to tull starting with the benefit album and followed the group in the 70s and then sort of forgot about them until early 2000s when i saw them again.

Anti-Theist rock. Anderson played a school flute. The B side of Aqualung was basically an atheist sermon

Well. This is one of those ‘learn something new every day’ moments. I had no idea Tony was with Tull for a little while. I like Tull’s music but have been a big fan of Black Sabbath since I saw them in Tallahassee, FL in ‘71. Stood right up front for the whole concert ..... and couldn’t hear for three days. Young and dumb back in those days and didn’t think about earplugs. LOL

Off to line up tunes for the Canteen. It took a while to decide what direction to take this week.

He has said that he learned to play flute when he realized that the rock world was full of great guitar players and he would never be as good as any of them. He did it to distinguish himself.

Saw Tull live five times starting in the late 70’s to the mid 90’s. Tightest live band I saw and I saw a lot. Martin Barre is a fabulous guitar player. Ian kicked him out of the band 13 years ago.
