A former adviser to President-elect Donald Trump says the incoming administration will focus on achieving peace in Ukraine rather than enabling the country to gain back territory occupied by Russia.
Bryan Lanza, who worked on Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, told the BBC the incoming administration would ask Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his version of a "realistic vision for peace".
"And if President Zelensky comes to the table and says, well we can only have peace if we have Crimea, he shows to us that he's not serious," he said. "Crimea is gone."
A spokesperson for Trump distanced the incoming president from the remarks, saying Mr Lanza "does not speak for him".

According to Trump himself, things got VERY dicey with Kimmy of North Korea, before Kimmy backed down.
As it is Trump has said Putin’s demands are “unacceptable”, and separately Trump has said that if Putin stonewalls, he (Trump) would pursue greatly increased weapons support to Ukraine. That IS indeed, the pattern of Trump’s negotiating style: such as when threatening a “100% tariff” and then agreeing to much less if the other side concedes a bit.
Actually, I suspect Pompeo has health problems. He certainly looks it.

That seems the most realistic scenario, but the nature of the war would change.
The other night I was loosely running some numbers, with the present (cost) level of weapons support from the Euros, but focused on what would amount to a high tech guerilla war. Lots of smart drones, for one thing. The cost of the war to Russia for defense and trying to rub out the guerillas would be at least as high as present costs, and one can extrapolate economic losses due to damage caused to infrastructure such as Russia's oil industry in the neighborhood of USD 300-500 billion per year. Very little of this cost in return contributes wealth to the Russian economy - sort of like bureaucrats and lawyers contributing little to the US economy. Then there are the sanctions, which even Pooty has finally admitted are damaging the Russian economy, and, the effects of loss of manpower.
I did not attempt to include the effect of depressed petroleum prices (almost a sure thing with Trump in office).
Anyway, a low end cost estimate comes out around $450-500 billion / year for (all that I included) costs to Russia of such a war.

Ukraine itself is not a vital national interest to the US, true. Ukraine could literally turn into a rather large swath of gravel tomorrow, and the effect on the US would be modest - mainly some inflation due to global grain shortages and so on. However, what matters is how this war proceeds and how that and its conclusion affect the ever developing historical flow of Europe: That is a current in which, guess what, Russia itself is most likely not the main threat to Europe. The threat is these events being the catalyst to Europe returning to its historical pattern.
I suppose that next you will tell us that Europe returning to form and going up in flames has no bearing on US national interests. Righto...
In any event, I have said nothing whatsoever about bitch slapping or the Volga. So, you are a very confused person.
What is true is that if the US pulls back, there is a good possibility this will degrade into a very ugly, very grim, very large & long guerilla war that will come to be dominated by autonomous stealthy drones. Running conservative numbers, the damages in Russia and Russian held territory could easily be in the neighborhood of half a trillion dollars a year. That’s not including the cost of attempted defense efforts. In a world with depressed oil prices due to Trump’s energy policies, and Europe gradually weaning itself off Russian gas, this is unsustainable for Russia. The only question then is whether there are ~ 3-5 million Ukies willing to commit themselves as did the signers of our US Declaration of Independence, and would Putin commit real genocide to drive them entirely out of Ukraine?
