I would have thought Gundy would be in a good mood after Tuesday. Maybe he had a little too much medicine the night before.

"The people who are negative and voicing their opinions are the same ones that can't pay their own bills. They're not taking care of themselves. They're not taking care of their own family. They're not taking care of their own job, but they have an obligation to speak out and complain about other people because it makes them feel better. But then in the end, they go to bed at night and they're the same failure they were before they said anything negative about anybody else."

Another day of Oklahoma State football, another “I’m a man. I’m 40.” Gundy outburst.

I graduated OSU, only went to a few games, don't follow it or any other college or pro sports. I only half-hardheartedly did before. I only watch OSU out of the corner of my eye because the rest of the family that graduated there are followers.

When I was working and building teams for massive projects I took interest in college and pro sports trying to learn something about success and trying to identify the differentiation of what makes a winning team. The short answer is recruiting and leadership. All teams recruit from the same talent pool, they all end up with a bunch of big, talented, interested players of similar qualifications. There may be one or two especially significant individual contributors but they alone are not capable of winning the game. They must have others to make a difference. Not really enough difference in the teams overall physically, mentally and athletically to make a team a winner.

So what is the difference between winning and losing teams? I think it is to find the right people that are not just talented but that will click together, build people up when they fail but to help them improve at the same time, to sometimes cull wheat and chaff, to make potential winners into real winners, to motivate, to create a strategy, plan and a vision, to set goals, standards and procedures to build and accelerate learning, to know how things are done, to set an example and work harder than anyone else to be successful. Leadership. It is what made General Patton a winner and General Clark a failure and Trump the winner that he is.

When teams fail consistently you usually need look no further than the coach for the reason. That is why they are paid well and have really good take-or-pay contracts. Gundy seems to be really good at ridicule and blaming everyone else but himself for failure. Just a few weeks ago he ridiculed his QB in words I could not believe. Tough love is OK but public ridicule seldom inspires loyalty or motivation. I've never seen it work. Gundy appears to be the reason the Cowboys are failing.

When I played football at a very small school we had a young coach that knew how to lead. The program at that small school had just restarted after many years of not having one after the death of a player. Our coach went to school at Tahlequah, North Eastern. We had a winning team that very first year of our program and we worked very hard to not disappoint Coach M. because he was proud of us even though he chewed us out but only when we needed it. I would put that young man up against the perfumed and over paid Gundy any day to make winners.
