We are in Charlotte for the next few days. Had a perfect driving day on Tuesday and made really great time…until we hit North Carolina and approached Lake Norman. Ridiculous traffic there and past rush hour, so who knows. Driving through the hills of Ohio was lovely, then it was even more hilly in West Virginia, and more beautiful! I just love driving those winding roads carved through a mountain! I always think of how it must have been to be in a covered wagon moving out “west”.
It was just 3 of us together for Thanksgiving this year, hubby, his Mom, and me.. Usually we are with our kids and grandkids out in the SF Bay Area. MIL is 96 and still pretty strong, only her vision is poor. Not totally blind yet, but it is very hard for her to see most things.
The sweet potato and apple side dish was a nice change but the star of the show amazingly was the fresh cranberry sauce I made. MIL and hubby couldn’t stop raving about it. Survived! LOL! This was the first year since 1981 that I had to drive to Thanksgiving (2.5 hours). Usually, I just walked across the pasture or took the golf cart if I had a lot of food I was bringing. On the way yesterday, I had to take a detour & pick my nephew up at an airport - he was flying in from Las Vegas. Fortunately, his flights were all early so we made it to The Feast an hour early. He entertained us with stories about his job so the hour and a half drive from the airport went by quickly.
Last year, I bought a casserole carrier. I wrapped it in towels yesterday to help retain the heat & the dishes were actually still hot when I took them out of the carrier to serve. The green bean casserole disappeared - there were literally 2 spoonfuls left by the time I got to it. The sweet potato casserole was almost gone. Mom and I will finish up the last 2 servings today.
The Feast was wonderful, as usual. All the food was good and my brother’s smoked turkey was the best. The kids were noisy, as usual. When we got home, mom said “oh, it’s SO quiet!” and was smiling. Since the weather was surprisingly good (supposed to rain all day & was sunny & mild instead), the kids played outside a lot which burned off energy & turkey sugar cookies.
All of the Christmas presents were distributed (yay!!!!!!) so all I have to do is mail one friend her presents. She’ll have to visit to get her jelly because it’s too heavy/fragile to mail. My niece came to me yesterday & said she’s got a bag full of frozen red jalapeno pieces and also blackberries .... could she come over one day (without the boys) and I could show her how to make Jalapeno Pepper Jelly & Blackberry Merlot Jelly? I would love that & we’ll have a good time doing it.
So that was the day yesterday. I have some projects to do today & a huge college football game to watch tonight - state rivals, one is the alma mater for most of the family & whoever wins goes to a bowl game ... loser goes home, so in addition to the intense rivalry, there’s even more at stake than usual.

Dad, both sons & 5 of 6 grandkids all went to VT.
Several of my cousins went to Virginia Tech. They grew up in the DC area.
If I’m looking at the schedule right, that game isn’t on until Saturday night. 8 pm, ACC network. It’s at Tech. Go Hokies!
Our Beagle, Dolly, had a GREAT Thanksgiving making the rounds of all guests who gave her a little of ‘this and that.’ That girl can work a room, LOL!
I start the minute the first snowflake falls and try to stay ahead of it. 6” or more at a time can take all day, but what else do I have to do in the winter months? ;)
We got an 18” dump overnight in 2009 I think it was? I was at my other farm and it was two days before my regular plow gal could get to me - then she hired someone with a skid steer to take care of it. Everything was shut down - schools, businesses and busses so nothing was moving, anyway. Shoveling down from the house to the chicken coop kept me busy for sure! The girls need their water and food. We never lost power, so that was a blessing.
I only remember it snowing like that one other time in my lifetime. I was a teen and it was New Year’s Eve. Of COURSE we were all out in it, making our parents crazy! It’s New Year’s Eve! You go out DANCING no matter what the weather! ;)
If you have a stack of books and seed catalogs, hot coffee and a warm place to wait, getting snowed in isn’t always a bad thing. ;)
I was also concerned that two turkey breasts wouldn't be enough, but it was with leftovers to share. The stuffing was moist, the potatoes were perfect and all the dishes others brought were perfect, too.
After everyone left, Beau gave me a big hug and complimented me on 'a job well done.' He watched me hustle all week and helped where he could, but he knows to pretty much just, 'stay out 'mah way!' LOL!
Everyone pitched in with cleaning up so there was time to relax afterword with our 'Patty La Belle' Sweet Potato Pie. We kept calling it a 'Patty La Pone' (Actress, 'Evita') Pie, LOL!
The only thing to do today is to ask Beau to take the two leaves out of the dining room table and stow them away until next needed. Also going to do some Black Friday shopping online. I don't have to decorate for Christmas because we're invited to other places this season but I'm going to put up my Fontanini Creche in it's usual spot - the REAL Reason for the Season.
Yup, Saturday night. They’ve played the day after Thanksgiving before & I had it in my mind that’s when the game would be.
Good - I have a ‘free’ evening tonight! I have a list of projects for today & the weekend, some easy, some a fairly major deal so I’ll be busy. Trying to get the house ready for company for the Family Get-Together Dinner on Sunday 15th. The dinner is 15 minutes from our house, but my brothers may attend (one has a 2.5 hour drive, the other 4.5 hours) & will probably spend the night, either Saturday or Sunday after the dinner.
No rest for the weary!

I couldn’t take Tippy to my sister’s house because she has a big cat.

So glad to hear that your big gathering went well! Sometimes I miss all the activity of big family events, but sometimes it’s nice to have it a little smaller and slower paced.
I love your crèche! My nativity scene is one of the first things I put up after Thanksgiving and one of the last things I take down. I often wait until Candlemas Day (February 2) before putting it away.
It will be a rush to get the outside decorations done. We won’t get home until Sunday evening, so I will probably start on Tuesday, weather permitting. Our home is a Victorian style, so I try to make it festive with greenery and bows and wreaths for the neighbors to see. We get compliments from the neighbors on it every year. Almost all of the homes in our neighborhood are brick, and they are much more modern than our house. We stick out a bit because of that.
No rest for the weary, indeed!
After traveling to and fro this week, we will be heading back to Columbus next weekend to see old friends, and hopefully our youngest son, if he’s not working on Saturday afternoon. A friend has a Christmas gift exchange party, and that way we get to see a lot of old friends at one time.
