My advice to Trump
I have no delusions of this advice getting noticed by Trump or by anyone who has Trump’s ear. But indulge me anyway.
Right out of the gate, Trump should push two pieces of legislation that Congress, generally speaking, will resist, and that lobbyists in particular will marshal all their weight against, but that will garner enormous public sympathy if Trump chooses to use his bully pulpit to press the issue. I think that enormous pressure could be put on Republicans in Congress to vote for these, and the chance of passing them might be higher now than ever. Indeed, immediately after Trump takes office might be the only moment when either of these bills would ever stand a chance if Trump decides to do this.
These are:
1. The One Subject at a Time Act
2. The Read the Bills Act
I believe that these are bills that Trump himself would probably support, but may not have given much thought to yet.
Versions of these bills have already been sponsored by Rand Paul and others.
While these two bills should be fronted in the agenda, they should be accompanied with calls for a series of simply one-subject bills that lobbyists will hate and that the general public will love, such as:
3. Legalize incandescent light bulbs
4. Legalize high volume toilets
5. Legalize high volume shower heads
6. Legalize old fashioned easy pouring gas cans
7. Legalize raw milk
And so on.”
