Stephen Moorer was working at the Golden Bough Playhouse in Carmel when the suspect, 27-year-old James Marshall, walked by carrying a rifle.
"He had an AR in one hand and a crowbar in the other, and he was kicking over these barriers that had been put up at the corners, and he was walking from Eighth Street, the corner, down Monteverdi," Moorer explained. "We were kind of up against the building under the eaves of the back where the Circle Theater is, and when he came up the driveway, we all just kind of stopped and tried to be, you know, non-threatening and just stood there, kind of backed away safely, and that's when he said, 'No filming,' and we just kind of nodded and said, 'Yes. Absolutely. Yes, sir.'"
Thankfully, no one at the theatre was hurt, but Moorer doesn't know how to feel.
"I just haven't been able to slow down, so I feel like probably I'll sit down at home tonight and burst into tears or something," Moorer said. "I just, I just don't know."
The Carmel Foundation opened its doors to people who were looking for a place to escape the situation unfolding a few blocks away.
The foundation employees and 30 others crowded into the hallway and two rooms, shut the doors, and locked themselves inside.
The CEO of the Carmel Foundation, Kim Stemler, says having to hide was a traumatic experience. She says The Carmel Police Chief alerted her that someone with a gun was nearby. She says hearing the shots firing was frightening.
"We're all extremely tense, and then even afterward, when we got the all clear," Stemler said. The Chief texted me and said, 'It's all clear. People can leave.' There's this adrenaline. We're not used to dealing with shooting, thankfully. And there's an adrenaline that builds up and you know, so we're all reeling after that, and I don't think anything else can be expected. It was scary. People live here. We're not used to this in Carmel, and we serve a vulnerable population."
Folks who live in Carmel say this city is peaceful. Everyone is shocked, but glad to be safe.
"We leave our keys in our cars. We leave our front doors open, here in Carmel, you know, and probably not anymore," Moorer said.
"You don't mess with the Carmel police," Dan Gallemore, a resident of Carmel said. "This is a safe town. Yeah, they've got control over everything in this town."
"It's still a super safe community," Stemler said. "And gosh, the way the police came together, sheriffs here, everybody's here. And, you know, just the chief came right to us. We felt very well taken care of."

Does anyone know: Are police trained to shoot anyone with an Armalite, no matter what they are doing?
Ruh Roh! I could be in trouble then.
Probably clear to fire.
The media will back them up.
far as I know, Californians are not allowed to possess AR rifles.
Don’t know, but the original story says him mom had called police and said he was having a mental breakdown and he wanted police to kill him. Suicide by police?
So, they obliged. How nice of them. Personally, I never want to do something people are manipulating me into doing.
If the gun is bad, train them to SHOOT THE GUN./s
it reduces the moral ambiguity in the situation.
Sounds like my town.
Except I live in a small town on an island in Alaska and everyone goes armed, especially this time of year, because we have bears...but damn few criminals.
Did I mention there is no way to get here (Or leave) without a boat or an airplane?
It is a bit inconvenient at times. But you have to admit: It's about safe as it gets.
Carmel?? Or Carmel -By-The-Sea?? Article didn’t say
Suicide by cop is pretty selfish. Most cops aren’t predisposed to killing someone and can be severely traumatized by it. Just go in the yard and eat your gun.
What a crappy article, typical of the low-standards of especially local TV journalism.
It really said nothing except “guy walking around with a gun” and a bunch of emotive nonsense.
One had to explore others links and sources to find out even the basics of what happened.
Suicide by police?
It’s Carmel-By-The-Sea, but usually local news just calls it Carmel.
Not true, you can legally buy and own AR's in California.
Agreed, the article seems like it was written by an semi literate 5th grader and all the important info is missing. It was so poorly done I didn’t want to continue after reading the excerpt.
That’s the former mayor of Carmel.
