Pit bull owners should be required to maintain a million-dollar bond to cover potential civil liabilities for a dangerous animal. Anyone who doesn’t should face steep fines and criminal penalties that automatically apply or escalate to aggravated charges if they neglect to obtain a bond.

This wouldn’t bring back any of these killed children from the dead, but it might reduce how common these attacks are.

Here in Ontario it’s hard to measure how effective the ban is. The number of overall dog biting incidents hasn’t changed but those from Pit Bulls has dropped dramatically. The ban was introduced in 2005 and some groups are fighting to overturn the ban.

Dog owner should be charged with involuntary manslaughter— at the least.

Is “pit” a breed. Or is it a catch-all for a different ones.

My understanding is that "pit bull" can be applied to a handful of breeds with similar physical characteristics and demeanors. All of those breeds have the same problem that inadequate socialization or mistreatment can result in a dangerous dog.

No, but pits are killing many people in San Antonio and owners are going to jail.

My neighbor’s cat Lightning was killed a couple of weeks ago by a pit bull. He was my best cat friend. Couldn’t call the police because nobody saw it happen. A couple of months ago the evil dog got out and mauled the cat so bad that he was mostly OK but stopped coming outside. There were witnesses to that. I wish nothing but hell for these unstable demon dogs.

Yes “Petey” was. The first Petey lived six years. They had to finish the circle around his eye. The next Petey lived until he was 16 and died in 1946. Was not born with the black circle around his eye but make up artist Max Factor gave him one.

Yes, the dogs who played the part of Petey was a pittie. Wrong side of the tracks kids of course had to have a wrong side of the tracks dog (pit bulls had a bad reputation back then).

The first dog who played Petey was poisoned on set. There are conflicting stories about whether the dog himself was hated because of his behavior or whether whoever poisoned him had a grudge against his owner.

The boy who played the part of Alfalfa was reportedly terrified of that dog. Reports of the other child actors’ feelings toward him are also conflicting.

The Pit Bull thing has become so contentious, with the pit lobby and pitmommies viciously defending them and trying to claim all sorts of ridiculous things such as claiming they were once known as “nanny dogs” based on nothing but old photos of children posing with pit bulls.

Do an internet search on “vintage photos of children with alligator” and you’ll find pictures of little kids posing with huge live gators, and even riding on them. I guess they used to be known as “nanny gators” and it’s mean not to let kids play with sweet precious gators. 🙄
