Roma derives from the Hindu word for "man", not the Latin word for a city or empire. Romanian does come that Latin word. Romanian, oddly enough, is a Romance (Latin) language, closer to Italian than Roma (Gypsy), which is a Hindu dialect.

Maybe I’m misremembering, but didn’t the Gypsies originate in India? Whatever the case, they’re now widely regarded as the N-words of Europe.
