Professional sports leagues aren't immune to lockouts, as we've seen them in the NFL, the NHL, the NBA and MLB over the past couple of decades. Could the WNBA be next?
It's possible. On Monday, the WNBA Players' Association announced that they were opting out of their Collective Bargaining Agreement with the league.
The current CBA, which was agreed on in 2020, featured an opt-out clause following the 2024 season, and the league's players are utilizing that. They will be negotiating for higher salaries, better accommodations and much more. The WNBA is coming off a record season in 2024, with high television ratings and increased attendance, but the league is still not in great shape revenue wise.

Wow, CC is leaving the WNBA, good for her. Not that I care since she supports Harris.
man, I wish I could figure out how you folks post pictures and stuff on this site.
Eventually, it will be. She should have gone to play in Europe immediately.
A couple of freepers have corrected me on that. There are quite a few stories floating around saying that she’s jumped but apparently no official announcement. It may be internet rumors run amuck. But there are a lot of them. I wonder if some overtures were made and leaked, or if someone is putting a shot across the WNBA’s bow.
I don’t follow the WNBA, but I do pay attention to soccer. I continue to think that soccer will become the first women’s team sport to become a viable, self-sustaining (i.e. non-subsidy) major professional league. The current league seems committed to doing it right. (The Megan Rapinoe follies did a lot of damage in the too much whining department, but Rapinoe is finally gone.) It has long been true that a lot of top U.S. women’s players sign with European clubs for at least a few years. On the field, soccer is soccer, but it is an opportunity at an appropriate point in their lives to live abroad and experience other countries and cultures. It also enhances their bargaining power.
A U.S. women’s soccer player who got treated the way Caitlin Clark has been treated in the WNBA would jump to Europe in a flash. I don’t know how many U.S. women’s basketball players may be playing in Europe already; it’s pretty common in men’s basketball for the guys who don’t quite make the cut in the NBA. CC would be paid big bucks if she did make the jump. Even if she stays in the WNBA, it wouldn’t surprise me if some signals were being sent here that the WNBA needs to shape up, and fast.
The NFL, NBA and MLB are exceptions, not the rule, when it comes to pay and player incentives at the professional level. That’s because the television dollars are so big that there is no viable competition. But other professional sports, including all women’s sports, come in at a much lower price point and are healthier for it.
Demanding higher salaries from a money losing failing franchise? What else can you expect from a bunch of ignorant entitled women. Where the hell do they think the money will come from, their audience is miniscule, their jalousie and racism drove out the only player that had viewers tuning in. Do they think the NBA owners are going to keep doubling down on their losses out of...charity? The NBA owners should just walk away and cut their losses and let the Lesbian League have their just rewards.
I wish I owned an NFL team. I would apply DEI and have half the players and coaches be women and 13 percent be black. I would spend the whole season talking about the benefits of DEI for society.
Even Caitlin Clark and the trashy Angel Reese couldn’t bring the WNBA to profitability. The NBA owners are the largest shareholders of the WNBA and they will have say in all this. Be careful what you ask for comes to mind.
Wow let that sink in. There are 30 NBA Teams.
i haven’t been able to verify the clark to europe story. Everything i read says no as does clark.
It looks like she she doesn’t need the money...
she get 3m+ from nike and whatever she gets from State Farm, HyVee, Gatorade, Wilson, Gainbridge, Xfinity and Buick
Never watched 2 minutes of wnba until Clark.
They screwed her,
I won’t be back.
