This is why many people, especially women, grow up to be default socialists. They can't get past their schizoid sympathy/antipathy for people who suffer, even in the face of those who suffered yet triumphed, as the blurb on the back cover of Vance's book explains.
It's one thing to feel a sense of triumph if you are taken care of in life, as females often are, but manage to get a job, a spouse or children. But to persevere in the face of struggle and suffering is hard, hard and often dangerous work. The mere thought of it repulses many.
