Chavez died in office. He went to Cuba for medical treatment of his cancer.
The only two Cuba exports is sugar and tobacco.
And the machinery to produce both is falling apart as is the infrastructure in Cuba in general.
Whatever is “new” is Soviet era crap .
Now Cuba does rents out it’s military and “doctors” to third world hellholes but that doesn’t pay the bills because these third world countries are worst off than they are.
I suspect that Cuba has a large footprint in the drug trade.
It’s only limitations are the cartels in Mexico.

You’re obviously against the US using sanctions against countries, especially communist countries,...

I guess you could say that. I'm a vet and have paid more than my fair share of taxes. I have earned the right to have an opinion -- like most here.

This is 2024 - not 1946 when, with the help of others, including the Ruskies, we defeated the Germans.

Since then, we've gone around the world in war after war, invading the little guys for all kinds of made-up reasons (WMD, commies, tyrannical leaders, etc). We're now at the point where we can't even manage our own country. You know, like crime-ridden cities and hurricanes in NC. Of course, the big elephant in the room is the $35 TRILLION in debt that we've accumulated fighting all those wars against little bitty countries -- most of which turned out to be massive boondoggles and where we lost in the process.

The rest of the world sees our hypocrisy, and now they're doing something about it. They're forming their own coalitions to carve us out of the picture. And that includes our economy and our dollar (that we've weaponized time and time again).

You know. It's like your little kid grows up to be a teenager and then a young adult, and you tell them to go stand in the corner for something you don't like. It ain't working. Time is way overdue for us to pull up a seat at the world big-boy table and work things out -- not continuing to attack, attack, and attack. Attacks include clandestine regime changes, economic sanctions, and hot conflicts.

The rest of the world sees this for what it is and will find a way to deal with it on their own terms -- like the big boys have done (Russia & China).

Oh, and another point. What gives us the right to go around the world picking winners and losers? What gives us the right to tell another country who their leaders should be and what form of government they should have? Isn't that what we've complained about when the gubermint does the same to us?

Me hopes the paybacks aren't too bad for me and my family -- and yours, too.

The US is the only country in the world to trade or do business with?

Well, unfortunately, you don't know what the heck you're talking about.

US trade with the rest of the world and the US is less than 14% and shrinking.

By the way, just for your edification, it is almost 16% with them Chinese.

Go learn something new!

Even more incredible, according to O’Grady, is that the exodus now includes high-ranking members of the ruling Cuban regime, although not those at the very top.

thoughts?

“Me hopes the paybacks aren’t too bad for me and my family — and yours, too.”

Yes, you’re entitled to your opinion. Here’s mine.

I’m worried about the “payback” too, since... IMHO... every time we have (supposedly) stupidly elected Democrats, the Democrats, America’s enemy within, have gotten us into war after war, have screwed over our allies, have bullied the little guys and have screwed the US legal citizens and taxpayers over in the process while making themselves filthy rich via taxpayer money laundering (See: Ukraine)... leaving us in a spiraling debt that we’ll never be able to ‘pay back’, but will eventually cause a complete collapse (which the commies behind the Democrats will all applaud and celebrate).

America has been ‘the bad guy’ every damned time Democrats are in power, just as the case is currently. The current government has threatened to withhold military aid to Israel, for instance, if they don’t tow their (Obama/Jarrett/Soros, that is) “pro-Iran” leftist line.

As for you being against sanctions against nations that oppose our “””democracy”””.... sanctions hit them in their proverbial wallets, which is the only way to hurt those that oppose us. So what would you suggest, instead? Just... letting those anti-American nations have their way with us? Which is pretty much what every Democrat administration has done for an entire generation (or longer).

Well unfortunately for you, I do know what I'm talking about. Its called a rhetorical question. You may want to look it up. ie I'm well aware that the US is not the only country in the world to trade or do business with. THAT WAS THE POINT. Duh.

“there substantially depend on remittances from U.S. family members to survive.”
******************
So basically a large part of Cuba is depending on US charity!

Remittances have been supporting Mexico, Central and South America for decades. I forgot which country, but one South American (IIRC) President admitted his country's budget was 60%+ remittances from the USA.

I have been ranting for at least 25 years we should be taxing those remittances at 30% and now we are in a illegal alien crisis created by the Democrats I really think we should tax the remittances at at least 75%.

At that tax rate I think a large percentage of illegals would go back across the border of their own volition.
