I believe it was, in large part, the old Media and their Deep State allies trading long term credibility for short term political gains.

They had been doing that, in spades, since 1994. After the Republican revolution in 1994, I believe the Progressive Media stopped deluding themselves that they were impartial and reporting facts. I believe at that point, they understood they had to lie in order to save their Progressive, Deep State power structure.
