Like safeties, chamber indicators are mechanical devices and can fail. Never rely on them instead of a visual or manual check of the chamber.

I’ve never seen one on a 1911.

Most semi-automatics do. But there are semi-automatic rifles that have fixed magazines that you load from the top.
