As I understand it, “cake” does not refer to a dessert. Picture the old fireplace with a beehive opening for baking. To bake, they first shovel in hot coals from the main fire to warm up the oven. The coals are then scraped out and there is residue left behind. A thin mixture of flour and water is then poured into the beehive. It bakes and captures all the soot, etc., in preparation for the real baking. This soot embedded bread is called “cake.”
Now you know the true meaning of the insult.
