Why do people call the “authorities” when they find cool, valuable stuff? That would NOT be my first inclination.
In England if they find something old (metal detectorists) and it is museum quality the government has to give them the appraised value. If the government doesn’t want it they can keep it. It is to encourage the detectorists.
I guess this doesn’t fall under the same law. Oops.
