I think that was pretty much expected.

It’s much more fun to watch the 1980 election coverage, because they probably thought Jimmy Carter had a good shot.

You can see the despair as the night progresses.

At the eastern end of the Simi Valley lies the beautiful Reagan Library

After all our suffering for “history repeats itself”* that one would be welcome.

Go Trump.

High taxes on investments and the producers of wealth and innovators will be spread to the downtrodden poor, not just to the inside elites.

I love how they kept the old, “traditional” colors for that map.

We “deplorables” are red these days. No big deal. They wanna be blue, we’ll give ‘em a good reason.

That map, of course, required highly paid network panelists to explain and interpret the various regions and which states went which way. They had to read from prepared notes to do it right.

iirc, fox news didn’t exist back then so they couldn’t interrupt the election to call it for the loser.

Today if it happened MSNBC would say:
But with Minnesota fighting against the tide of right wing extremism I think we all agree the GOP is in real trouble holding a mandate together now. 3,761 margin for Mondale——a loss for Ronald Reagan there, plus the winning of DC show this story is not over.
(All panelists nod.)

The media may have held out hope for Carter up until Election Day 1980, but by the time they went on the air in the evening, they knew it was over.

John Chancellor of NBC (see link at post 5 below) essentially called the race in less than one minute after coming onto the air.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Think of it, in 1980 similar to now the economy was so bad under Carter that it was a benefit to Reagan (he was the change from what they presently had).

This election, Trump also benefits from running against Biden’s America (Economy, Illegal Immigration, Crime.. list is too long).

Trump also benefits from having been tested and America was indeed a success similar to what Reagan benefitted from in 1984.

I wish that I could go back to 1984....1980 would even be better.

Reagan knew how to educate voters every time he spoke and he obviously knew how to unite people and bring them together.

That 1984 map with Republicans shown as blue and Democrats as red is interesting. The colors were subsequently flipped only because the media was sopro-Democrat.

Some here remember but not all do, that voting for Reagan in 1980 was scary because the media was portraying him as a dangerous war monger who would lead us into WWIII with the Russians, who were at the time ascendant and seen by most of the media as destined to prevail, I think during the 70s and under Carter about 7 more nations had come under the Russian influence or control, the voters decided to take the risk and try Reagan’s strength and vision for victory.

Voting for “Ronnie Raygun” in 1980 was not without a little apprehension and sense of risk by many of the voters but he was convincing and offered leadership, while Carter was seen as dangerously weak and risky as well, it was lucky for the world and humanity that the voters went with strength over continued appeasement.

Will never forget CNN (only time I turned them on was election night 2016) announcer saying, “she has no path, she has no path to 270”! The weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth! Awesome!

Amazing how quickly we could determine a winner before all of this wonderful technology.
