Declining Fertility Rates

Great analysis by Samo Burja about declining global fertility rates.

Brainstorming some ideas that are compatible with Christianity: (note many of these are not compatible with the US Constitution)

1. Don’t let people vote when they reach 70 years old

2. Any welfare state that is available ceases to be available to seniors

3. Allow marriages without parental permission at the age of 16 (essentially 16 would become the legal age of adulthood)

4. Only allow people with dependent children the right to vote

5. massive tax reductions for those with a large number of children

6. make abortion illegal

7. implement family voting (the head of the household gets the same number of votes as the number of dependent children he has plus one as he votes on behalf of his wife)

8. Lump sum payment per child from the state

Here I am thinking long term and many nations will try a variety of things to keep their population from collapsing. Others will allow the population to collapse and paint it as a good thing as it reduces climate change or some other such nonsense.

I am not convinced that fertility rate issues can be solved with the spiritual strength Solzhenitsyn mentions.

The once strongly above 2.1 TFRs seen in religious nations are disappearing. I think some of our planets foundational political structures will be altered to fix this. Perhaps democracy will not be one person one vote. And on the totalitarian side we already say that governments can take a percentage of our income in the form of taxes, why won’t they say they can take some of a woman’s eggs as a form of taxes?

I remember our teacher - a nun in St. Genevieve's High School in Van Nuys California - telling us in 1962 that birth control would lead to infidelity and higher rates of sexually transmitted disease and divorce, and then to legal and common abortion.

We grimaced, like how the heck would she know?

Then she said that abortion would lead to childlessness, the breakdown of marriages and families, homosexuality, euthanasia and societal breakdown.

Now, of course, we can see that she was prescient way beyond her years.

The only way back is a return to faith and the values Our Lord has given us.

Murder in your bedroom, is not allowed. The state may allow it but God does not.

I think that if the nations would merely enforce God’s laws, these problems would resolve quickly.

Fertility rates are not dropping. Abortion and contraception are ramping. God does His part. Man does his. It’s the murderous woman doing her part that is dropping the number of babies born.

Most of the time, abortion vs contraception is a distinction without a difference. I guess with abortifacients, ignorance of the number of victims is bliss.
