HOA's are not the only governing body that regulates homes and property. Local governments can impose: business only, farm only, residential only use. There are also local restrictions for certain areas like - no farm animals, etc.
Bottom line - know the restrictions that an HOA or local government imposed on a neighborhood or area. If you can't abide, find another neighborhood.
HOA’s should be illegal.
“Before buying a home governed by an HOA - read the HOA rules, regulations and by-laws. If you can’t abide by them, you have no business buying a home in that neighborhood.”
That’s all well and house until the HOA, in conjunction with the owner developer, violate their own rules. That happened in the subdivision where we lived before moving here and why we moved.
They started mass building cheesy homes with square footage less than stipulated in the CC&Rs.
We’ve lived with HOAs, and without. Both can be very good and both can be terrible.
